A. Morse Died After Brief Illness Passes Away In Same House In Which He Was Born Here 43 Years Ago. The death of Van Allen Morse aged 43, which occurred this morning shortly after 9 o’clock at his home on Morse street, was a shock to his many friends in Ionia, coming as it did after an illness which up until about two days ago was not thought to be a serious one. While he had been suffering for several weeks with illness of a minor nature, and had taken to his bed two weeks ago today the critical nature of his ailment was fully realized but a short time before his death. Dr. J. W. Whinnery of Grand Rapids was called in consultation with Dr. F. M. Marsh on Monday night and his affliction was diagnosed as leucaimia. At that time the opinion of the physicians was that he had but a few days at the outside to live. Mr. Morse, although he had been a resident of other places for a number of years, was an Ionia boy and was born in the house in which he died, May 17, 1877. He attended school in Ionia and was a junior in the Ionia high school when his father, Judge A. B. Morse, was appointed United States consul at Glasgow, Scotland. Mr. Morse went to Glasgow with his father as a secretary in the American consulate there, leaving his school course here, to take up his duties there. After returning from two years spent in the Scottish capital Mr. Morse went to Iowa where he later attended the Still college at Des Moines and was graduated from the pharmacy department. He remained in Clarion, Iowa, for some time, and then went to El Reno, Oklahoma, where he was in the drug business until he returned to Ionia about ten years ago. Returning to Ionia, his boyhood home, Mr. Morse took up his residence in the old homestead on Morse street, where he had since resided. He was a member of the Ionia lodge of Elks. On February 5, 1907, he was married to Miss Marguerite Jasper at El Reno and with Mrs. Morse, two sons, Allen, aged 12, and Dan, aged seven, survive him. Besides his immediate family, he is survived by his parents, Judge and Mrs. A. B. Morse and two sisters, Mrs. Elvert M. Davis, of Grand Rapids, and Mrs. G. L. Yates, of Ionia. The funeral will be held from the residence of Judge and Mrs. A. B. Morse, on East Washington street, Sunday afternoon.
