Morton, aged fifty-nine, a well-known and highly respected resident of South Boston, died at his home Friday after a long illness. Funeral services were held at the residence Sunday afternoon conducted by Rev. DePuy of Lansing and burial was made in the South Boston cemetery. Mr. Morton was born at Union Ridge, Cook county, Ill., Jan. 27, 1847. The next year his parents moved to Michigan and settled in Boston township, where he has always lived. He enlisted in the Tenth Michigan Cavalry and served in the war one year under Colonel I. C. Smith. He married Oriana White, who survives him, Aug. 27, 1868, and they made their home on the old farm. During 1873 he was in Salt Lake City, Utah. He was a member of Clarksville Lodge I.O.O.F. He was an upright, honest citizen and made many friends throughout this part of the state. The following friends attended the funeral: From Grand Rapids—Mr. and Mrs. J. C. West, Mr. and Mrs. Oden Hugart, O.D. West, J. C. Scott, Ben E. West, Mrs. Elkerton and Mrs. H. S. West, from Ionia—Mr. and Mrs. Jas. Soules, Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Cushion and two sons, also many from Lowell, Whitneyville, McCords, Lamont and Alto. The people of South Boston are noted for their large attendance at funerals but this was considered the largest ever held there, showing the high esteem in which Mr. Morton was held. The display of wild flowers around the body made the most beautiful effect imaginable.
