Moulton former residents of this city, had died at the home of his parents, in Ionia, that morning following a short illness which was caused so it is supposed by a slight injury which he received in a football practice game on Tuesday of last week. Gilman, or “Rusty” as he was affectionately and better known here on account of the color of his hair had many friends here and the parents have the sympathy of the people of this city in their loss. The following item, clipped from Saturday’s issue of the Ionia Sentinel- Standard, gives the facts connected with the young man’s case more completely. Gilman Moulton, 16, son of Mr. and Mrs. George Moulton, 116 Rich street, died at 6 o’clock this morning at the home from infantile paralysis after being ill but a short time. He was a popular student of Ionia High School and a prominent athlete in county circles Physicians say that death was undoubtedly due to the paralytic condition, although an injury to the young man’s back received in football practice, Tuesday afternoon, may have aggravated the disease and hastened its action. The home was quarantined today for infantile paralysis and that is the cause of death as stated on the certificate of death. Tuesday afternoon while practicing “blocking” on the high school field the young man was hurt and complained to some extent of his injury at home that evening. A physician treated him at that time. Tuesday and Wednesday he attended school, leave at about 11 o’clock, Wednesday forenoon after complaining of not feeling well. When he became quite ill Wednesday night a physician was again called and nothing of a serious condition was noted. Early Thursday morning it was noted that Gilman could not move his feet and medical aid was summoned at once. He became gradually worse until death came at an early hour this morning. Gilman Moulton was born at Belding, May 2, 1905. After attending school there in the primary grades, he came to Ionia with his parents at the time Mr. Moulton was elected county clerk. Since that time he attended the Ionia schools being a junior at the time of his death. He was very much interested in Boy Scout work and attended the Sunday school of the Church of Christ. Besides his parents Gilman Moulton is survived by two brothers, Bruce Moulton, employed by the General Electric Co., at Pittsfield, Mass., and Howard Moulton, of Kalamazoo. Funeral arrangements have been made but are contingent upon the arrival of Bruce Moulton from the east. Funeral services were held Monday afternoon from the home at Ionia. Rev. M. H. Garrard officiating and burial took place in the family lot in River Ridge cemetery in this city. Schoolmates of the deceased acted as pall bearers and a large number of students of the Ionia schools came over to this city to be present at the burial.
