Munkacsy, 89, died on Jan. 31, 2009 in Melbourne, Fla. Mr. Munkacsy, who was a recent resident of East Lansing, was born in Carteret, N.J. on April 7, 1919 and lived there for 87 years. He was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He was also the great-great- nephew of famed Hungarian artist, Mih’aly Munk’acsy. He was a WWII veteran and recipient of the Purple Heart. He was employed as an electrician for the Chevron Corporation, Perth Amboy Division, retiring after 30 years. He was a parishioner of St. Martha Parish in Okemos, a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2314, and the Disabled American Veterans. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Estelle Magac Munkacsy; a daughter Francine (Frank Bancer) Munkacsy of New Bern, N.C.; a son, Alan J. (Sarah Sprague) Munkacsy of East Lansing; a grandson, Derek J. (Jeaneen) Jess; four grand-daughters, Megan Miller, Samantha (Andrew) Howe, Michelle and Alix Munkacsy and three great-grandchildren, Ashlyn and Kaleigh Jess and Gavin Howe. Alex was preceded in death by his parents, Elek and Borbola (Molnar) Munkacsy and his sister, Elizabeth (Bess) Touey. Funeral services will be held at St. Martha’s church in Okemos on Saturday, Feb. 7, 2009. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Soldier’s Angels (soldiersangels.org), being a wounded WWII infantryman. Alex had a special concern for the soldiers currently serving in Iraq and Afghanistan and special prayers for Steven Rivera.
