Murphy, 84, who died at his home in that village age 4:30 p.m. Saturday. The Rev. Gerald Jacobs will conduct the service and interment will be in Highland Park cemetery at Ionia. Mr. Murphy is survived by his wife, Grace; one son, Gilbert of Detroit; one daughter, Mrs. Lloyd Schilbe of Lansing, and four grandchildren, of whom Pvt. Joseph Mercado is with the army in South Carolina, and Seaman 1/c Phillip Mercado with the naval air forces in Panama. One son, Edward Murphy, died several years ago and a daughter, Mrs. Helen Mercado, died about four years ago. Mr. Murphy has been in failing health for some time, but was not confined to his bed until Saturday. Arrangements were made to remove him to the hospital but death came suddenly before this could be done. Mr. Murphy was born in Lyons April 27, 1981, the son of Edward and Mary Murphy. He was graduated from the Portland high school and from Michigan Agricultural College, now Michigan State College in East Lansing in 1882. He took to teaching as a profession and served as superintendent of the Pewamo and Muir schools and for four years was Ionia county school commissioner. During that time he studied law as an avocation and later attended the University of Michigan where he was graduated from the law school in the class of 1895. In the fall of that year he opened a law office in Ionia, where he was associated with the late Frank C. Miller. In 1920 he moved his family to Lyons, where he has since resided. Mr. Murphy served Ionia county as circuit court commissioner for 40 years, his term expiring in January 1945. He has been justice of the peace and village assessor in Lyons for a number of years, and held the offices at the time of his death. His body will remain at the Shaw Funeral home in Muir until 1 o’clock Tuesday afternoon when he will be taken to the Lyons Methodist church for the services.
