Leslie “Mort” Murphy, 82, of Jefferson, Georgia, and formerly of Ionia, 
Michigan and Fruitland, Florida, passed away on Friday, September 15, 2006 at 
BJC Medical Center in Commerce, Georgia.  Leslie was born on April 18, 1924 in 
Edmore, Michigan. He was the son of the late Leslie Herbert and Maude B. 
(Liscombe) Murphy.

He graduated from Ionia High School in 1942 where he was an accomplished 
athlete. He married Shirley Josephine Todd on July 4, 1942 in Stanton, 
Michigan. He served in the US Army from 1942-1945 in Nebraska, Philippines, 
and Japan during W.W.II. He was a member of the VFW Lyons Lodge. Leslie was 
employed at the Ionia State Hospital for the Criminally Insane in 1946 where 
he managed the laundry for 23 years and was industries foreman at the Michigan 
Reformatory until his retirement after 32 years in 1979. As a skilled 
conservationist, he then continued to pursue his love of hunting and trapping. 
His fishing adventures included knowledge of most lakes in Michigan, the St. 
Johns River in Florida near Fruitland, and trips to Alaska. He was eager to 
share his knowledge with his grandchildren and others. In recent years, his 
hobbies included jigsaw puzzles.

He is survived by his wife, Shirley, of Jefferson, Georgia, four children, 
Pamela (Craig) Buys of Mt. Pleasant, Michigan, Daniel (Mary) of Satsuma, 
Florida, Janet (Alfred) Hayes of Fruitland, Florida, and Susan (Richard) 
Patillo of Jefferson, Georgia, 9 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren. He 
was preceded in death by his sister Lorraine Pelon and his brother Joseph 
Murphy.

Graveside services are scheduled for 11 a.m., Friday, September 22, 2006 at 
Balcom Cemetery in Ionia, Michigan. Cremation has taken place. Visitation will 
be at Lake Funeral Home in Ionia from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday, September 21, 
2006. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to a charity of donor's 
choice.
