Feb. 16, 2013 Former Chief Deputy for the Ionia County Sheriff’s Department, James Jason Mustaine passed away peacefully in his home on Feb 13, in Ft. Pierce, Fla. at the age of 83. Born in Lansing April 4, 1929, to James and Geraldine Mustaine, he joined the Army at a young age, falling into the Army Air Corps, eventually working on the Mercury and Apollo space programs. During his enlisted time, he married Virgilene Wiggins. They had three children, Leona, Crystal and Winona. After retiring from the Air Force, Jim moved his family to Michigan and began a promising career with the Ionia County Sheriff’s Department, working his way to Chief Deputy for Sheriffs William Bensinger and Terrence Jungle. Upon retiring from the Ionia County Sheriff’s Department, Jim and Virgie moved back to Florida, where Virgie passed; and he married her sister, Velma Wiggins, thus inheriting three more children, Jim, Penny and Cindy. He is survived by two brothers, Bruce Mustaine (Elsie) from North Carolina and Phillip Mustaine (Phyllis) from Michigan; all his children; and several grandchildren, great-grandchildren. He is preceded by his two wives, Virgilene and Velma; sister, Laney Mustaine; and brother, Maurice Mustaine from Orleans.
