Sept. 18, 2012 Howard Wayne Nash, 93, formerly from Lyons, passed away Sept. 15, 2012 in Spring Lake. He was born Aug. 22, 1919, in Ionia, the son of Edgar and Nettie (Gierman) Nash. He attended Steele School and graduated from Ionia High School. He was a member of Mr. Woods FFA Club in 1937, which traveled to Kansas City where the team won the FFA National Dairy Judging Contest. He attended a dairy short course at Michigan State University in East Lansing. He married Josephine Heator on April 12, 1945 at LeValley Unite Methodist Church where they have been life long members. They established their home and farm at East David Hwy. where he was a farmer throughout his life. He worked at Allis Chalmers in Lansing, TRW in Portland, and the Lake Odessa Livestock Auction. He enjoyed family gatherings, whether with children and grandchildren or family reunions. In later years he had a pair of haflinger horses with a wagon that he enjoyed giving rides to several children, in various local parades. He also liked attending tractor and steam engine shows, and animal auctions. In 2009, he and his wife moved to Spring Lake. Howard is survived by his loving wife of 67 years, Josephine Nash of Spring Lake; son, Dwight (Gwen) Nash of Elsie; daughters, Sherry (William) Thelen of Grand Haven and Teresa (Brian) Horan of South Haven; brother, Gordon Nash of Virginia; sister, Greta (Clark) Parsons of Lowell; sister-in-law, Elaine Nash of Ionia; eight grandchildren, Kevin, Kim, Amanda, Bryan, Tracy, Jeremy, Matthew and Brian; and 17 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Raymond, Forrest and Carl; one sister, Vivian; and three sisters-in-law, Betty Nash, Beverly Nash and Luella Nash. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 20 at LeValley United Methodist Church with Rev. Ray Sundell officiating. Visitation will be held 4 to 6 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 18 at Lake Funeral Home in Ionia. Anyone wishing may make memorial contributions to LeValley United Methodist Church or Ionia Area Hospice.
