JAMES NELSON

IONIA - James Nelson, age 87, of Ionia, passed away on Wednesday, November 17, 
2021. He was born on August 30, 1934, the son of James and Josephine (Long) 
Nelson in Cadillac, MI. He graduated from Frankfort High School in 1952 before 
moving to Traverse City and then later to Ionia.

Jim enjoyed sailing on Lake Michigan on the Ann Arbor car ferries, where he 
worked by his father's side in the engine room, He grew through the ranks to 
become an oiler on several of the ranks to become an oiler on several of the 
different ships in the fleet. He served most of his remaining work career with 
the Stare of Michigan Prison system. 

He had an artistic crafty nature about him and he enjoyed making things for this 
friends and family. He was a loyal member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles and 
the Moose Lodge. He serviced two years in the U.S Army, serving in Lebanon and 
Germany, while at the same time as Elvis Presley. Jim was a member of Saint 
Peter & Paul Catholic Church and a Boy Scout Leader.

Jim is survived by his loving wife, Janice; children, Jamie (Marlo) Nelson, 
Renee Nelson, Russel (Teresa) Nelson, Melissa (Tyson) Burke, William Nelson, 
Christine (Jack) Furgala, Andrew (Mary) Wilson and Todd (Candy) Swayze.

He was preceded in death by his grandson, Michael Parker; sister, Julie Sattler; 
nephew, Dane Sattler and son-in-law, Michael Parker Sr.

A Celebration of Life will be held on November 27, 2021 rom 12-3 PM at the Ionia 
Moose Lodge in Ionia. Arrangements in care of Lake funeral Home of Ionia. Online
