November 6, 2021 NEVINS Vincent N. Nevins age 79, of Ionia passed away October 28, 2021. He was born October 12, 1942 in Alma, Michigan the son of Clayton L. and Lois Louise (Kuse) Nevins. Vince married the love of his life, Sharon Poort, on June 25,, 1966 and together the raised three children. Vince graduated from Alma High School in 1961 and went on to graduate from Western Michigan University in 1965 with his B.A., where he was also a member of the WMU tennis team. Vince earned his M.A. from Michigan State University in 1968 although he remained a rabid Wolverine fan Vince taught American History, Government and Psychology for Ionia Public Schools and retired after 37 years in 2001. He also taught college courses for Montcalm Community College, Central Michigan University and for the Michigan Prisons. Vince loved being a teacher in Iona and shared many wonderful memories of his students Vince also coached for Ionia Public Schools for 25 years; coaching Boys basketball, boys tennis and girls tennis. Vince was extremely proud of the years he spent coaching and mentoring his players; he spoke of his teams successes and all the fond memories of his players. Vince was very proud that he started the girls tennis team in Ionia and that he was a member of the "300 victory club" of the Michigan Tennis Coaches Assoc. Later in life he enjoyed catching up with his students and players; reliving all of the great memories of teaching and coaching Vince also was very proud of the time he previously served on the Ionia City Council, the City Planning Commission and on the City Recreation Committee. Vince had a lifelong love of the outdoors; pheasant, woodcock, grouse hunting, deer hunting, fly fishing and golfing. Vince loved his hunting dogs and enjoyed all of his hunting and fishing trips where he could do what he loved. Vince cherished that he was able to hunt and fish with all of his children and enjoyed watching his grandchildren develop a love of the outdoors as well. Vince had many great friends and companions who he enjoyed spending his days hunting and fishing with over the years. Vince was a member of the Ionia Moose Lodge, former Treasurer of Ionia Chapter of Pheasants Forever and the Ionia Hunting and Fishing Lodge. Surviving are his wife of 55 years. Sharon Nevins of Ionia. Children; Michelle (Scott) Braun of Sheridan,Spencer (Michelle) Nevins of East Lansing and Kelly (Thomas) Melle of Sheridan. Grandchildren'Jordan "Goose" (Kari) Braun,Dillon (Hayley) Braun and fiance' Marshall Rademacher, Jerrod Melle, Madison Melle, Aaron Nevins, Amelia Nevins, Elijah Nevins and Cora Nevins. Great-grandson Julian Vincent Braun. Brother Van (Sharon) Nevins of Ithaca. Sister-in-law Barbara Nevins of Taylor. Mother-in-law Marian Poort of Ionia. Sister-in-law Cynthia Poort of Hart.Several Nieces, Nephews and special friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother Victor Nevins. Funeral services are scheduled for Tuesday, November 2, 2021 at 11:00 a.m. at the lake Funeral Home in iInia with Pastor Jerry Kissling officiating Interment will be at a later date with family only at Woodard Lake Cemetery.
