Newcomb. Our community was startled on Monday morning last by the announcement that Mrs. Elizabeth Newcomb, wife of W.P. Newcomb, was dead. She had been, down to the date of her death, in usual health, and on Sunday attended the usual religious services, both morning and evening. After the evening service she seemed especially interested in scripture reading, and read aloud to her husband and sister-in-law from the new translation the 14th chapter of John, closing with the language, “Arise, let us go hence!” Soon after the reading, at 9:30 o’clock, she retired. At 11:30 her husband noticed an unnatural heavy breathing, and made an effort to awake her, but failing, he became alarmed and struck a light and then renewed the attempts to arouse her but without avail. She gasped once or twice and was a corpse. Besides her husband, she leaves two children, Mrs. Florence Vandenburgh of this place and Mr. Joseph Newcomb of Carson City, an only sister, Mrs. M.P. Husker of Palo, and a half brother, Mr. C. Walling, residing near Howard City, to mourn her unexpected departure. Mrs. Newcomb was the daughter of Jas. Walling, and was born at Lyons, Ontario county, N.Y., Sept. 6th, 1819, and hence was 60 years of age at the time of her death. When 3 years old her mother died and she was brought up by an uncle. When 24 years of age she came to Michigan and settled at Rome, Lenawee county, where she married W.P. Newcomb in 1847. She proved a faithful companion and devoted mother until her decease. When about 18 years of age she made a public profession of religion, and united with the Baptist Church at Lyons, N.Y. She always maintained the integrity of the christian life, and lived a consistent and earnest christian. On the organization of the Baptist Church here she and her husband became members. She will be sorely missed by the church, for she was truly a “mother in Israel;” she will be sorely missed by the whole community, for she had no enemies, and was a woman “full of love and good works;” she will be especially missed by the bereaved relatives, for she was dear to all their hearts, but they have the assurance that she “sleeps in Jesus.” Her funeral was attended at the Christian Church on Tuesday by a large concourse of citizens, and a sermon was preached by her pastor, Rev. Wm. Buel, from the words she last read: “Arise, let us go hence!” The bereaved family have the warm sympathy of the whole community, and desire us to express, in their behalf, heartfelt thanks for the many manifestations of sympathy that have been to them a solace in this hour of deepest sorrow.
