Newhouse, 99, for 40 years a resident of Traverse City and a former Muir resident, died at the home of friends there late Saturday night. He would have been 100 years of age April 9. He was regarded as the oldest Traverse City resident. He had no particular ailment, doctors there declared, but had been in bed since August because of a weakened condition brought on by old age. One daughter, Mrs. A. E. Cottingham, of Ionia, survives. There are two granddaughters and two great-granddaughters. Funeral services are to be held Tuesday afternoon at 2:30 o’clock at Traverse City. Burial will be there. The Traverse City American Legion, of which he was an honorary member, will conduct the services. He served four years during the Civil war as a member of Company K, 79th Ohio infantry. He was a native of Ohio and moved to Muir where he operated a general store for a number of years. He helped construct the Tabor theater of St. Louis and was a contractor in his later years. …[missing words] attended in a body and acted as an honorary escort. Frank M. Wirtz was the bugler. E. MacFarland, Dr. V.J. Hooper of Detroit; Mr. and Mrs. Shong, Mr. and Mrs. William Vanderveck of Ellwell.
