Thomas S. Newkirk, of Ionia, age 63, passed away on Wednesday, Dec. 32, 2008. 

He was born on Dec. 9, 1945 in Grand Rapids the son of Norwyn and Ethel 
(Elzinga) Newkirk. Tom retired from the State of Michigan Department of 
Corrections after many years of service. He enjoyed bowling, fishing, hunting 
and gardening. He was a true outdoorsman. He was a Veteran of the Vietnam War 
serving in the United States Navy and a member of the Sheridan VFW Post #5065.

He was preceded in death by his father; sister, Nancy Schrauben and stepfather, 
Gene W. Clark. Surviving are his wife of 41 years, Carlo Newkirk; children, Jon 
(Julie) Newkirk of Grand Rapids and Kristie Newkirk of Ionia; mother, Ethel 
Clark of Ionia; brother, Gene W. Clark of Ionia; sister, Colleen Thompson of 
Arizona; brother-in-law, Ken Schrauben of Pewamo and several nieces, nephews, 
relatives and friends. 

The funeral will be conducted by the Rev. Larry Brown. Pastor at 2 p.m. Sunday, 
Jan. 4, 2009 at the First United Methodist Church, Ionia. Interment will take 
place in the spring at Easton Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the 
Schrauben-Lehman Funeral Home, 220 Rich Street, Ionia from 6-8 p.m. Friday and 
2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Saturday. For those desiring, memorial contributions may be 
made to the Zion and First United Methodist Church Food Banks or the American 
Cancer Society in memory of Thomas S. Newkirk. Online condolences may be made
