Ionia Sentinel Standard, 2002

Hazel E. Newland, 88, of Ionia, formerly of Howard City, passed away Sunday, 
Feb. 10, 2002 in Ionia.

She was born May 27, 1913 in Martinsville, Ind., the daughter of Benjamin and 
Mary (Lloyd) Kenney.  She married Harold Newland in 1960.  She worked as a 
welder of General Motors for 35 years.  She was a member of the Howard City VFW 
and the Newaygo American Legion.  She was a standing member of the AFL-CIO.  
She was a neighborhood volunteer for anything that needed to be done or anyone 
in a time of need.

She is survived by her sisters, June Williams of Indiana and Ruby Peters of 
Indiana; daughter-in-law, Judy Tungett of Florida; grandchildren, Connie 
(Terry) Swainston of Lyons, Debra (Jerry) Aikens of Ionia and Lynda Tungett of 
Howard City; six great-grandchildren; five great-great-granddaughters; and one 
great, great-grandson.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold in 1985; son, George in 1996; 
and one granddaughter, Robin in 1985.

Upon her request, cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held 
at 1 p.m., Tuesday at the Lake Funeral Home in Ionia with Rev. Kendall Harger 
officiating.  Anyone wishing may make memorial contributions to the Kidney 
Foundation in care of Lake Funeral Home in Ionia.
