Sad Death From Above Cause At Portland. Portland, Mich., Sept. 28 – A sad death occurred here Wednesday night the result of an accident. A.E. Newman, employed in the flouring mill of the Portland Milling Company, went into H.M. Gibbs’ drug and grocery store, where he did his trading, going in by the rear door. Willis Gibbs, the prescription clerk, was at supper, and the grocery clerk, Webster Peake, was behind the prescription case, which stands near the back door. On the counter were standing, as usual, two or three druggists’ graduates of various sizes. Mr. Newman remarked that he would take a drink of water and would use one of the graduates for the purpose. He turned to the water faucet near by, filled the graduate and drank its contents. Just before noon Mr. Gibbs, the prescription clerk, had put up a prescription containing aconite, using the same graduate which Newman used, and which had been left standing on the prescription counter after suing. It is supposed two or three drops of the poison settled in the bottom of the graduate, and Newman, not rinsing it out, took the poison into his system. Before he died he told the physicians the facts stated above, and he died about three hours after taking the poison. He leaves a widow but no children, and a brother, I.N. Newman, who is clerk in Brown’s drug store, Detroit.
