NEWTON DEAD AFTER BRIEF ATTACK - Was Taken Sick Last Sunday and Pneumonia Follows, Causing His Death Friday Evening. --- O. E. Newton, lifelong resident of Ionia county, died at the family home, 607 West Main street, at 5 o'clock Friday evening after an illness of less than a week with pneumonia. He was 65 years of age. Mr. (Owen) Newton was born in Easton township and lived there until about 15 years ago, when he and Mrs. Newton came into the city to live. He attended Dildine school as a boy and later was president of the Dildine school association, also being a member of the official board of the Dildine Methodist church and a member of the building committe at the time the church was built. Mr. Newton was married to Miss Flora Bixby, also of Easton. Their only daughter, Mrs. Ray Ellis, died a number of years ago. Since coming to Ionia Mr. and Mrs. Newton were regular attendants of the Methodist church, and at the time of his death Mr. Newton was a steward of the official board. For the past few years Mr. Newton was connected with the real estate firm of Freeman, Newton & Fleming. Mr. Newton attended the Chamber of Commerce banquet last Friday night and was downtown Saturday. He was taken ill Saturday night. Funeral services will be conducted from the residence by Rev. Charles J. Kruse Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock." IONIA SENTINEL-STANDARD, MI, March 5, 1924, p 3: "The funeral service for Owen E. Newton was largely attended from the late home on West Main street Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock. The service was conducted by Rev. C. J. Kruse, of the Methodist church. The music was furnished by Mrs. Ray Colwell and Chandler Haight. The bearers were all close friends of Mr. Newton, and were Clinton Taggart, James Dildine, Charles Stevenson, John Adgate, George Kuhtz, and Frank Bradford. Burial took place in the family lot in Oak Hill cemetery. Those from away to attend the service were Ed Bixby, of Flint; Glenn Bixby, of Detroit, Mr. and Mrs. Ray Jenks, of Fenwick, and Miss Frances Perrine, of Ann Arbor."
