The Ionia Sentinel-Standard, Friday, December 26, 1947

Seriously ill since November 22 with a heart condition and kidney infection, 
Alfred A. Nichol, 65, for 25 years an office employee of the Pere Marquette 
railroad in Ionia, died suddenly at 2:00 a.m. Friday.

Mr. Nichol had shown definite improvement for several days, so much so that he 
suggested his transfer from his home on Union street to the Ionia Convalescent 
home only a few days ago.  He died there Friday morning.  Mrs. Nichol had gone 
to Badger, Wis., near Madison, to be with her daughter, Mrs. Robert Barnard, 
and 12-day-old son, Robert Nichol Barnard, for a few days.  Mrs. Nichol 
arrived there Tuesday night.

Upon graduation from Ionia high school, Mr. Nichol was employed by the Pere 
Marquette railroad until he entered business in Ionia operating a 
confectionery store for several years.  He then returned to the railroad and 
had continued in its employ since.  On his birthday, November 21, Mr. Nichol 
completed 25 years of service with the railroad and was eligible for 
retirement, although he had intended to continue.  He became ill the next day, 
on November 22.  He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. John Nichol of Ionia.

The body was removed to the Boynton funeral home to await return of Mrs. 
Nichol for funeral arrangements.  

Surviving beside the wife is a son, John Erwin Nichol, of Stockbridge; a 
daughter, Mrs. Robert Barnard, and grandson, Robert Nichol Barnard, 12 days 
old, of Badger, Wis., and a sister, Miss Janet Nichol, of Detroit.

Mr. Nichol served as first ward alderman in the city of Ionia under the late 
Fred W. Green, who then was mayor.
