The death of John Nichol, well-known Ionia attorney and prominent Mason, after several months’ illness, occurred shortly before noon Friday at his home on Union street. For several weeks his condition has been critical and for a number of months Mr. Nichol had been unable to carry on his usual work. Mr. Nichol has been long one of Ionia’s best known men, a resident of this city for the past 45 years, and a resident of Ionia county for over half a century. He came to Ionia from Danby township in 1883 as county drain commissioner, having settled on a Danby farm in 1876. He was born in County Donegal, Ireland, May 27, 1847, and came to Philadelphia, where he lived during the early days of his residence in America. He studied law in Ionia and in 1892 was admitted to the bar, opening offices in the Webber block shortly thereafter. Since then he had practiced his profession as a member of the Ionia county bar association. He was instrumental in the enactment of Michigan’s first drain law and served the county as its first drain commissioner. During the later years of his life he was a justice of the peace in Ionia. He had also served Ionia county as deputy county clerk, and Ionia city as its city attorney. He was prominent in Ionia and in Michigan in Masonic circles, and he had held nearly every office in the local orders, into which he was initiated February 26, 1869. He served as thrice illustrious master of the grand council of Michigan, and as eminent commander of Ionia commandery, Knights Templar, and was a member of DeWitt Clinton consistory and of Saladin temple. January 7, 1872, he was married to Mary Creaser, and they had observed their fifty-sixth wedding anniversary last winter. Mrs. Nichol survives him with two children, Miss Janet Nichol, and Alfred A. Nickel of Ionia. Funeral services will be attended Sunday afternoon from the residence at 3 o’clock, and interment will be in the Highland Park mausoleum.
