The Ionia County News, Thursday, December 21, 1939
Funeral services will be held at two o’clock Thursday afternoon at the Ionia 
Presbyterian church for Mrs. Harriett Kennedy Nichols, 74, wife of George E. 
Nichols, prominent Ionia attorney, who died Tuesday morning at her home, 155 
E. Main Street, after a four week’s illness.  Rev. A. J. Westmass will conduct 
the rites, with burial in Highland park cemetery.  Bearers at the services 
will be Robert Smith, Foss O. Eldred, Ray A. Colwell, Montgomery Webster, Fred 
Vander Heyden and Fred T. Mason.  In charge of flowers will be Mrs. Lee Wilson 
Hutchison and Mrs. Arthur Hutchison of Grand Rapids.

The deceased was a lifelong Ionian, having been born March 4, 1865 at the home 
on Rich street which after her marriage to George E. Nichols in 1888, 
continued to be her home for many years.  Her parents were James h. Kennedy 
and Eliza Ann Moseman Kennedy.  Following her graduation from Ionia high 
school in 1882, she attended the University of Michigan.

Mrs. Nichols was prominent in church and club work, having had the honor of 
being the second oldest living member of the Presbyterian church.  Among the 
organizations which benefited from her services were the D.A.R., Elks 
auxiliary, and Women’s Literary club.

Surviving are the husband with whom she celebrated their golden wedding 
anniversary last year; one son, James K. Nichols of Ionia, one brother, Henry 
J. Kennedy of Detroit; and two grandsons, James K. Nichols II and George 
Nichols, both of Ionia.
