Mr. Nichol's health has been noticeably falling for some time but was usually well when a stroke of paralysis seized him week ago Thursday and the end came Monday morning. Uncle John Nichols was blind from early manhood having suffered the loss of the first eye by an accident in boyhood. When a young man, he was of a studious nature and secured an education and taught school. He then went into the drug business but the continuous strain on his one eye was too great and inflammation shortly afterward deprived him of this last means of sight. He lived more than fifty years in darkness never having seen his wife or children. He has lived in this vicinity 43 years and leaves a daughter, Mrs. Wm. Schmitz with whom he lived, and a son, Harry in the west from whom they were unable to locate in time for the funeral. Although blind, Mr. Nichols was not helpless. He could move about the house and barn as through he could see and whenever he wished he would come to town guided only by his faithful cane, and his face was so familiar that even the children knew him, but he will be missed most by the faithful little daughter and her husband who have been his constant guardians for the past ten years or since the wife died. He was born in Castletown, Vt., Feb. 12, 1832 and died Dec. 12 making him 78 years and 10 months old. In 1867 he was married to Esther Thompson and leaves aside from his two children above mentioned, a step son, J. S. Thompson of Barryton, who with his wife were present at the funeral. The funeral was held Wednesday morning at 10 o'clock at the home. Rev/ Thos. Laity preached and Mrs. A. J. Dann and Mr. Laity sang, with Miss Mildred Durkee as organist.
