Patrick James Nielsen, 52, of Ionia passed away unexpectedly Sept. 8, 2011 in 
Ionia. He was born Sept. 14, 1958 in Lakeview, the son of Jack and Janiese 
(Coady) Nielsen.

He graduated from Lakeview High School in 1977. Patrick married Mary Cantlon 
August 6, 1982 in St. Clair Shores. He worked for the Department of Corrections 
for 25 years, where he was ranked as a Lieutenant and was the Regional 
Commander of the Emergency Response Team. He was also a master weapons trainer. 
Patrick voluntarily served one year in Iraq from 2005-2006, where he assisted 
in coordinating the corrections system in Iraq.

He attended Resurrection Life Church and SS Peter & Paul Catholic Church. He 
adored his grandsons and was an avid outdoorsman. He loved nature, to camp and 
Irish whiskey. He was a patriot for his country and a patriot for justice.

Patrick is survived by his loving wife of 29 years Mary Nielsen of Ionia; 
daughters, Megan (Justin) Stover of Dublin, Ireland and Kelly Jo (Joel) 
Leipprandt of Bad Axe, MI; father, Jack (Julie) Nielsen of Lakeview; mother, 
Janiece Inman of Coral; brother, Peter (Amy) Nielsen of Coral; sister, Jacquie 
(Jim) Fase of Coral; mother-in-law, Theresa Cantlonof Warren; grandchildren, 
Liam Patrick Dolan Stover and Jude Francis Martin Leipprandt.; brothers in law, 
Robert (Debbie) Cantlon of Troy, John (Anna) Cantlon of Troy and Michael 
Cantlon of Wyoming, Mich.; sisters-in-law, Kathleen Cantlon of Utica, Carol 
(Stephen) Zelinski of Rochester Hills and Laurel Cantlon of Georgia; and 
special nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his son, James Patrick Nielsen; father-in-law, 
Robert Cantlon; and brother-in-law, James Cantlon.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 16, 2011 at SS Peter & 
Paul Catholic Church with Pastor John Prominski and Father Tom Boufford 
officiating. Visitation will be held 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, 2 
to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Lake Funeral Home in Ionia and 10 a.m. 
Friday until time of service at the church.

Anyone wishing may make a memorial contribution in Patrick’s name to Mary 
Nielsen which will be designated to the family of “Jimmy” (refugee family
