Tuesday, November 14, 2006 Fern Nielsen, aged 84, of Lake Odessa, passed away peacefully at her home on Sunday afternoon, November 19, 2006. Fern was born in Hastings, MI on August 20, 1922 to Chester and Clara (Lepard) Hesterly. She graduated from Lake Odessa High School, attended Western Michigan University for two years, and then taught for several years at a country school near Ionia. On June 10, 1944 Fern was united in marriage to Kenneth Nielsen. For the next 50 years they raised their family and farmed near Lake Odessa. Together, Fern and Kenneth enjoyed camping and riding their Harley Davidson motorcycle. Since Kenneth’s death in 2000 Fern enjoyed spending time with her friends at the coffee shop. Fern had been a long-time member of the Lake Odessa Grace Brethren Church. She was especially devoted to her family, and always found time to spend with her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. Fern is survived by her children, John Nielsen, Ruth (Rick) Huckaba, and Jean (Larry) White; 10 grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren; sisters, Helen Bever, Beulah (Max) Bradley, and Iris (Ed) Zook; many nieces and nephews; and other loving relatives and friends. Fern was preceded in death by her parents; Kenneth, her loving husband of 56 years; granddaughter, Kristin Armstrong; and sister, Burnice Clum. Visitation will be held at the Koops Funeral Chapel in Lake Odessa on Tuesday, November 21 from 1 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 9 p.m., and Wednesday, November 22 from 4 to 6 p.m. The funeral service will be held at the Koops Funeral Chapel at 11 a.m. on Friday. (There will be o visitation on Thanksgiving Day.) Burial will be in Lakeside Cemetery. The family has suggested that memorial contributions may be made to the Lake Odessa Grace Brethren Church or the Ionia Area Hospice.
