IONIA MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENT DIES
12 year-old was member of wrestling club
BUSHNELL TOWNSHIP - A 12 year-old Ionia Middle School student died Friday an ORV 
accident.

Mason Nielson, of Fenwick, was driving a Massimo 4x4 with two 7-year-old 
children as passengers when the vehicle struck a bump in the yard and 
overturned. The accident happened at approximately 12:41 p.m. on the 4000 block 
East Boyer Road, according Montcalm County Undersheriff Michael Williams.

The boy was ejected from the vehicle. a 911 call said he was not breathing and 
emergency personal attempted to treat the child, however he was pronounced dead 
at the scene. The other two children suffered minor injuries, according to 
Williams.

Nielson had just completed sixth grade at Ionia Middle School, according to his 
obituary. He loved the outdoors, biking and was a member of the Ionia Wrestling 
Club. On Friday his mother posted a picture of Nielson and his dog together on 
facebook.

His funeral will be Thursday, July 14 at Lux and Schnepp funeral Home in Carson 
City at 1 p.m. Visitation will be at noon on the same until the time of the 
service.

Pastor Jim Barrett will be officiating and memorial contributions can be made to

The children were not wearing helmets or seat belts, according to Williams. 
There were seat belts available on the ORV. The incident remains under 
investigation but alcohol did not play a factor in the accident, according to a 
press release.
