Northrop was born Oct. 28, 1827, at Westfield, Chautauqua county, N. Y., and died March 5, 1915, near Lyons, Mich., at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Melvin Lapo with whom he was spending the winter, Mrs. Lapo being his granddaughter. April 12, 1856 he married Miss Jane Quayle at Westfield, N.Y., and to this union were born five children, four of whom survive: Mrs. O. W. Marsh of Britton, S. D.; Mrs. Joseph McQuillin of Ionia, Mich.; Mrs. M. J. Brownell and Charles Northrop of Seattle, Wash. Mr. and Mrs. Northrop with three small children moved to Michigan in April 1867, and settled on a farm of 160 acres five miles from Kalamazoo. They resided here until March, 1881, when the moved to Claremont, S. D., where Mrs. Northrop died June 2, 1900 and the youngest daughter, Jennie Stocking was laid at rest the same year. Since her death he has traveled quite extensively, making his home with his children with the exception of several winters spent in the south. While living at the home of Mr. and Mrs. McQuillin he had formed many acquaintances in this vicinity and was loved and respected by them all and familiarly known as Uncle Robert. He was honest, industrious, possessed no bad habits and has led a Christian life since early manhood. Often he would speak of a Sunday school which he organized while spending the winter on Little Abaco Island of how rapidly it grew and of children who came there who had never attended religious services before. He greatly enjoyed doing such work as this for the betterment of humanity. The funeral was held at the home of his granddaughter, Saturday, March 6, 1915, Rev. Davidson officiating and the remains were shipped to Hufton, South Dakota, being accompanied by his son-in-law, Joseph McQuillin. He will be laid at rest beside his wife, Wednesday, March 10.
