Sudden death took John W. Norton, 84, Wednesday morning at ten o'clock at his 
home, 1022 West Main street.

Mr. Norton arose in his usual health Wednesday morning and ate his breakfast 
without complaining of illness. Some time later however he remarked that he was 
not feeling well and his death quickly followed the heart seizure.

Mr. Norton had been a resident of Ionia nearly all his life since coming here 
from New York where he was born August 22, 1852, with his parents Steward and 
Jane Norton. He was nine years of age when they came to Ionia and at a later 
date he worked for seven years in the Muskegon county lumber woods. Then he 
returned to Ionia and has resided here since.

Mr. Norton's father worked as a miller in the pioneer mill of Samuel Dexter, 
located about where the Ionia Armory is now.

In December 1878 Mr. Norton was married to Sarah Cole, who died in February 
1916. He is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Edward C. (Ted) Bloomer, and five 
grandchildren, and one half brother, Clark Norton, of Ludington, who is at 
present on a vacation trip and whose whereabouts were being sought today to 
notify him of the death.

A half sister, Mrs. William Hammond, died recently in California, and  burial 
services for her are to be conducted here next Wednesday. 

For many years Mr. Norton conducted a freight and general cartage business in 
Ionia, a business which had been carried on since he retired by his son-in-law, 
Edward C. Boomer.

Funeral services for Mr. Norton will be attended Friday afternoon at 2:30 
o'clock from the residence 1022 West Main street. Interment will be at the 
family lot in Highland Park cemetery.
