Aug. 6, 2013 BELDING- Joseph Louis Nowak, 90, of Grattan Township, passed away on Saturday, Aug. 3, 2013, at home under the loving care of his family and Hospice. He was born on March 10, 1923, in Otsego County near Gaylord on the family farm, the son of Andrew and Helen (Rossa) Nowak. Joe graduated from Gaylord St. Mary High School. During World War II he served in the U.S. Navy as a carrier pilot. He married Doreen Feger in 1946, who survives along with their 14 children, Annette (Rob) Rian of Suffolk, Va., Gregory Nowak of Las Vegas, Nev.,Catherine Nowak of Lansing, Kristine (Robert) Bloomer of Sebewaing, Carolyn (Michael) Sower of Alvin, Texas, Thomas (Kristen) Nowak of Bozeman, Mont., Daniel Nowak of Greenville, Marianne Vinson of Pineville, La., Rebecca Borek of Comstock Park, Teresa (Michael) Callahan of Belding, John Nowak of Grattan, JoAnne (Douglas) Harrell of Grattan, Laurie (Kevin) Huested of New London, Wisc., Douglas (Brenda) Nowak of Rockford. Joe is also survived by 34 grandchildren and 29 great-grandchildren and one sister, Ann Cherwinski of Gaylord. Joe received a Bachelor of Science degree from Aquinas College in business management. He served his community in various ways, Adopt-a-highway, Grattan Historical Society, and supervisor of Grattan Township. He was a member of St. Patrick Parish in Parnell. Mass of Christian burial will be 11 a.m. Friday at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Parnell with Father Mark Peacock presiding. Rite of committal will follow in St. Patrick Cemetery. Visitation will be 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday with a rosary prayer at 7 p.m., at Johnson-Feuerstein Funeral Home, Belding. Memorials may be given to St. Patrick School or Ducks Unlimited.
