Oct. 28, 2009 Joseph Donley Nugent, 49, of Ionia, and formerly of Battle Creek, passed away peacefully in his sleep at The University of Michigan Medical Center on Friday, Oct. 23, 2009. Joe fought a long and courageous battle with Chronic Myelogenous Leukemia (CML), and was a participant in many medical drug trials during his fight assisting his Hematologist Dr. Moshe Talpaz, in searching for a cure for CML. It was very important to Joe that he was a part of the search for a cure for CML. Joe was born on Feb. 13, 1960 in Grand Rapids, the son of the late Charles Emmanuel and Dianne Marie (Bignell) Nugent. During his youth Joe enjoyed living in many different states. Joe enlisted in the Army in 1978 and was honorably discharged. He became a Master Service Technician for the Chrysler/Dodge dealership Family and worked at Erich Henkel Dodge in Battle Creek, Asheville Dodge in Asheville, N.C. and many others. When Joe was diagnosed with CML, he chose to relocate to Ionia to be closer to his family. Joe enjoyed riding and modifying his quad, playing with his 4 dogs; Baby, Whiteboy, Curly Dude and Wings. His many hobbies included hunting, modifying quads for stunt riding, metalworking woodworking, reloading, hydroponic gardening and general tinkering with anything that had an engine. Joe’s mind was always thinking up new and inventive ideas, planning projects and trying to “recreate the wheel”. Joe loved his family and spending time with them. He is survived by his mother Dianne Nugent; daughters Toni Miller and Michelle (Erik) Halstedt of Battle Creek, Tracy Diaz-Martinez of Dothan, Ala.; sister, Colleen “Kelly” (Bill) Keating of Battle Creek; brother, Patrick (Michelle) Nugent of Ionia; grandchildren, Emily Miller and Leah and Logan Halstedt; special niece Shannon Keating of Ann Arbor, with whom he lived during many months of his treatment; nephews and nieces Bill (Katy) Keating of Columbia, S.C.; Ty (Michelle) Keating of Roanoke, Va., Charles (Kathleen) Nugent of Ky., Crystal (Ray) Risner, Colleen, Brianne and Ethan Nugent and Ashley Thomas of Ionia; great-nieces Madison and Evelyn Keating (South Carolina) and Alexi Nugent and great-nephew Gabriel Nugent (Kentucky). Joe was especially proud of his nephew Charles who was in the Army currently serving in Afghanistan. He also left behind many friends, especially his quad stunt riding buddies known as the “Lunatic Fringe”. Joe was particularly excited about the designing and building of his 15 ft. steel jump ramp, with the help of the Fringe Riders. It was his goal post-transplant to make a jump from the ramp. He achieved this goal and was extremely proud. (See video on You Tube under Lunatic Fringe). Please join us for a Celebration of Joe’s Life on Sunday, Nov. 1 at the Resurrection Life Church, 426 West Main Street in Ionia. Cremation has taken place. In lieu of flowers, Memorial contributions may be made to the family for his final expenses or to the University of Michigan Cancer Center designated for the CML Research of Dr. Moshe Talpaz.
