Oakes, 79, of 683 David highway, died at Ionia County Memorial hospital Friday afternoon after being a patient two weeks. Born at Alpena November 23, 1892, he was the son of James and Emma Robin Oakes. He attended the Alpena schools and graduated from Alpena Business college. He also completed a course with the International Accountants society. He served as Alpena city councilman at one time. He worked at the Huron Portland Cement firm at Alpena as bookkeeper several years. He then worked for Besser Manufacturing company in Indiana as salesman selling concrete block manufacturing machinery. He was engaged in this type of work until moving to Ionia in 1955 when he opened and operated the Ionia Concrete Products business until November 1969. He was a member of LeValley United Methodist church, life member of Thunder Bay chapter of the Masonic lodge, life member of Alpena Commandery 34, Knights Templar, also life member of Order of Eastern Star. In the fall of 1971 he was awarded a 50 years membership pin from Alpena Masonic lodge. Surviving are his wife, Mary of Ionia; son, Donald of Grand Rapids; and sister, Mrs. Rhoda Bowden of Alpena. Funeral services will be Monday at 11 a.m. at Leddick funeral home. Rev. Donald R. Fry will officiate and graveside services and interment will be at Woodlawn cemetery at Reed City at 3 p.m. Monday.
