Excerpts from Obituary
PHILIP M. O'CONNELL
Died Friday morning November 24, 2017-age 85
Born Ionia County to Stephen Bruce O'Connell & Margaret Schmoltz.
Survived by loving wife of 62 years, Patricia, 3 daughters, son, 10 
grandchildren, great-granddaughter, sister & brother-in-law, nieces, nephews, 
& special support team.
Preceded in death by 3 brothers Dan, Robert & Louis.
Attended Aquinas College where he met his wife, Patricia Swigers in 1955.
Graduated Aquinas with Bachelor's degree in Biology, then a Master's degree 
in Education from  Michigan State University. 
Started career as Jr. High school teacher, & soon moved to administrative 
roles, vice-principal, principal, assistant superintendent & Superintendent 
of Kenowa Hills School District, where he retired in 1989. 
After retirement, returned to teaching as Associate Professor at School of 
Education at Grand Valley State University.
Visitation will be held at the Metcalf & Jonkhoff Funeral Home, on Friday, 
Dec. 1, 2017 from 4-7 p.m. with tribute to Phil at 5:30 p.m.
