Just as everybody was making plans for a day of rest or pleasure, just when the Sunday school was in progress, a little after ten o’clock, word came that Lloyd Olds, repair man for the Citizens Telephone Co., was hanging across the electric light wires down near Mrs. Tebbel’s residence. Nobody knew just how it happened. Being busy through the week, he had come down here to do a little repair work for the Smyrna Telephone Co, and was engaged at that work when the accident happened. Where he was at work the telephone wires and electric light wires run along side by side quite close together and it is a rather dangerous place to work, but he was quick, lithe and sure footed and no one thought of him as being connected with any mishap. One minute he was seen busily engaged with the task before him and the next he was lying across those awful death dealing wires. Miss Emma Lee who is staying with Mrs. Mary Tebbel, was probably the first one who saw him, and she said “Oh Lloyd, what is the matter,” but he could not reply, and she screamed for help. The families who live near where it happened, Mr. and Mrs. Osborn, George and John Tebbel and their wives were quickly there and to the first comers he held out his hands for help but soon lapsed into unconsciousness. As soon as the word could be got to the plant the electric power was shut off, but by that time he was burned beyond help although doctors and nurse worked over him faithfully until after all heart action had ceased and they were forced reluctantly to say he has passed away and there was no hope. Lloyd Olds only son of Mr. and Mrs. Hiram Olds, was born twenty-two years ago just over the township line in Orleans but nearly all his lifetime was passed in or near Smyrna. He was one of our Smyrna boys, pleasant, fun loving, and full of life, yet always polite to those older than himself and ready and willing to help all who needed his assistance. He was loved by all who knew him and those who knew him best loved him most. When he was called to be a soldier boy it was with regret we saw him go away and with joy we greeted him on his safe return. Besides his parents, he leaves an only sister, younger than himself and they are nearly heart broken with the grief they find so hard to bear. The Ballard-Lloyd undertakers removed the remains to the home of Mr. and Mrs. Ed. Insley. After he was taken down from the pole it was suggested that a pulmotor might be used effectively in restoring respiration and the one belonging to this city was quickly secured with Miss Irene Barnes, matron of the City hospital in charge but his life was gone out. Lloyd had many friends in Belding. His funeral was held this afternoon at 2:00 o’clock from Mr. Insley’s residence.
