June 1, 2013 Norma O'Mara, 92, of Ionia passed away May 31, 2013. She was born Dec. 4, 1920 in Grandville, the daughter of Leslie and Frances (Rose) Shoemaker. Norma married Owen McCaul in July of 1944. Owen died in combat during World War II. Norma grew up singing with her brothers and sisters. She embarked on a singing career, but decided that life on the road was not for her. She married Thomas O'Mara on Sept. 16, 1950 and began her new career as a mother of nine children. She entertained locally for many years with the Knapp Family and continued singing even after moving to Green Acres in 2008. Norma amazed those who listened with her ability to sing and yodel. She is survived by her children, Onette McKenna, Colleen (Larry) Goodman, David (Gwen) O'Mara, Phillip (Diane) O'Mara, Patrick (Deb) O'Mara, Robert (Patty) O'Mara, Stephen (Cathy) O'Mara, all of Ionia and Thomas (Darcy) O'Mara of East Grand Rapids; brother Dale (Eileen) Shoemaker of Sparta; sisters Barbara Ockerman of Hastings and Marlene (Bob) McKinney of Weberville; sisters-in-law Mary Shoemaker, Rosemary Hickey, Ruth O'Mara, all of Lake Odessa, Pauline (Ken) Hubbard of Saranac and MaryGene Valdes of Ionia; brother-in-law Eugene O'Mara of Lake Odessa; 25 grandchildren; 21 great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, in-laws Frank and Emma O'Mara, husbands Owen and Tom, daughter Susan Csonka, brothers Donald and Arnold, sisters Lorraine Scheidt and Madellan Shoemaker, brother-in-laws Bud Scheidt, Lawrence O'Mara; sisters-in-law Mary O'Mara and Marie O'Mara. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at SS Peter & Paul Catholic Church with Father Tom Boufford celebrant. Interment Balcom Cemetery. Visitation will be on Monday 2:30 to 5:00 and 6-8 p.m. at the Lake Funeral Home in Ionia, on Tuesday 10 a.m. until the time of service. There will be a scripture service on Monday at 8 p.m. at the Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations to SS Peter & Paul Parish or Ionia Area Hospice.
