At 2 p.m. the Fitzjohn Funeral Home was well filled with friends and relatives who came to pay a last tribute to a well known and well liked man. A wealth of beautiful blossoms lined the room and gave mute testimony to the esteem in which Mr. Orser was held. Mrs. Eston Bates at the organ played soft music. Rev. Gustave Ferre, pastor of the Baptist church, in prayer and in scripture selections brought words of comfort and of uplift as he pointed the way to God and to heavenly peace. In his appropriate message he united appreciation of the departed with words of hope and comfort for those left behind. Mrs. Bruno Scheffler, accompanied by Mrs. Eston Bates, with voice and organ, saying “The Old Rugged Cross” and “In the Sweet Bye-and-Bye.” Bearers were Vance B. Loyer, John Wilson, Ollie Taft, Wes Porter, Arthur James and Robert Barron. Those attending the service from a distance or having been with Mrs. Orser for some time were the daughter and husband, Mr. and Mrs. W.B. Fisher, the granddaughter, Mrs. Robert Hanley, all of Erie, Pa.; the nephew and wife, Mr. and Mrs. Geo. Wilson, of Flint; a niece, Mrs. Will Losey, and daughter and husband, Mr. and Mrs. Harold Ripley, of Lansing; Mr. and Mrs. Lynn Payne, of St. Johns, Mrs. Verne Fisher and Mr. and Mrs. Albert Godfrey of Detroit. Mr. Orser was born in St. Clair county in 1858 and lived there during his youthful days. In 1882 he was married to Miss Jennie Smith at Old Brockway near Yale and came directly to this city where they have lived ever since. For 18 years he was with the Ballou Basket Co. and he and W.D. Ballou carried the first log into the factory. He was a veteran of the old lumbering days and helped several winters floating logs down Flat river from Six Lakes to the mouth of the stream. For over 50 years he had been timber buyer for the Belding Basket Co. He was a member of the Baptist church and of the Brotherhood and will be greatly missed.
