Mr. Orser had been in very poor health, caused by a nervous disease, for the past five years or more and had been unable to work for the greater period of that time. Despondency over ill health weighed upon him so heavily that at about 1 o’clock Friday morning Mr. Orser retired to a small room in the rear of the family home at 315 Front street and placing a shotgun to his head, ended his life. While the report of the discharge of the gun was not heard by the members of the family, they did hear a thud and a noise as if the house was shaking and Alfred Jewell, a son-in-law, who with his wife, came to take up their residence at the Orser home this fall, notified Chief of Police Allen J. Russell who found the body shortly after the act had been committed. Coroner Bruce G. Fales was immediately notified and he went to the home and after looking into the facts in the death decided that it was unnecessary to hold an inquest. Mr. Orser was 75 years of age and was born in Port Huron. He came to Belding in 1873 and in 1880 he was united in marriage, at Orleans, to Miss Nellie Connor. For many years Mr. Orser was in charge of the engine at the Ballou Basket Works, later known as the present Belding Basket Company plant. He was a good citizen and was always well thought of and well liked by a legion of friends who valued his acquaintance and friendship. Surviving are the widow, two daughters, Mrs. Carrie Jewell, of this city and Mrs. Hazel Newell, of Indianapolis, Indiana; three sons, Hal Orser, of Ionia, and Howard and Leo Orser, of Grand Rapids; also three brothers, Will Orser, of this city, David Orser, of Chicago, and Ed. Orser, of Camas, Washington, and a sister, Mrs. Rhoda A. Patterson, of this city. Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at 2:30 o’clock from the Fitzjohn funeral home, under Odd Fellow auspices and with Rev. C.W. Biastock officiating. Burial was in Easton cemetery.
