Belding News, 4 Dec 1904

At Rest.  

Oliver S. Osborn, aged 84 years, 5 months and 29 days.

Deceased was born on the 23d day of June, 1820, in the state of Vermont at the
foot of the Green Mountains.  His parents were poor and when he was but eight
years old he left home to maintain his own support and worked for his board
until he was old enough to earn wages.  At the age of 16 he went into
Massachusetts and from thence into the state of New York where he worked on the
Erie canal.  In 1844 he came to Michigan having only sufficient money to pay his
fare to Detroit.  He walked from Detroit to the village of Mason where in 1845,
he was married to Miss Nancy Matherson.  From Mason he came to Otisco, Ionia
county and settled on the piece of land that has always been his home since the
year 1847.  He endured all the hardships and troubles inseparable from a pioneer
life with a strong heart and unfailing cheerfulness.  He took sole care of his
father and mother during the declining years of their lives and his aged mother
with her dying breath gave him a fervent “God bless you Oliver.”  He laid his
father, mother, beloved wife and four children in their last resting places
within the short period of eleven years.  In 1874 he was again united in
marriage to Mary J. Osborn who has been a true, loving helpmeet to him, always
taking the best of care of him through all of his sickness until the end which
came at 12:30 p.m., Nov. 22, 1904.  He was the father of eight children, of whom
three, two sons and a daughter, survive him.  Funeral services conducted by the
Rev. A. Secord of the Belding Congregational church, were held in Smyrna church
at 2 o’clock p.m., Friday, Nov. 25, 1904.  Interment in Smyrna cemetery.
