The Portland Observer, Wednesday, January 14, 1885
Died – in Portland, Tuesday Jan. 13, 1885, at the residence of his daughter, 
Mrs. John D. Woodbury, Mr. N. Outwater, aged 70 years, 10 months and 18 days.  
Funeral services will be held at the Baptist church on Thursday afternoon at 
two o’clock, Rev. M. B. Miller officiating.  We will publish an obituary of 
the deceased in our next issue.

The Portland Observer, Wednesday, January 21, 1885

Mr. N. Outwater, whose death was announced in the last issue of the Observer, 
was born in Hoboken, New Jersey, on February 25th, 1814.  At the age of 18 he 
removed with his parents to Wilson, Niagara County, N.Y., where he remained 
until 1860.  During that year he moved with his family to Portland, Michigan 
where he has since resided until his death last week, making almost 25 years 
that he lived in this place.  He leaves six children, all of whom are married 
and have homes of their own.  Mr. Outwater was always a man of strict honesty 
and integrity of character, believing the golden rule to “Do unto others as 
you would that they should do unto you.”  Some ten years ago he began to study 
the doctrines of the seventh day adventists, and was soon led to accept of 
them and henceforth lived a christian life and died in the triumph of a living 
faith.  He fulfilled the scriptural measure of threescore and ten years, and 
there we leave him for the great hereafter.

Albert Outwater, of St. Marys, Ohio came to Portland last Wednesday to attend 
the funeral of his father in this place.
