June 19, 2012 Mildred "Mickey" Palmer passed away peacefully on Friday, June 15, 2012 at age 104 while at Oakview's Sutter Living Center. She was born in Portland, Mich., on March 10, 1908 to George L. Bandfield and Marian E. Ward. She studied dance and theatre in Grand Rapids at the Overholt Dance Academy. She was a member of the National Honor Society and graduated in 1926 from South High School in Grand Rapids. Mickey married her high school sweetheart, William E. Banninga and later moved to Ludington where they purchased the Mobil Distributorship and later owned the Shoreline Motel. They celebrated 47 years before his death in 1976. Later, she married Norman Palmer of Corpus Christi, Texas, and enjoyed 14 years together. Mildred then moved back to Ludington. Mickey served on the staff of the Grand Rapids Camp Fire Girls and was director of it's summer day camp program several years. She was a member of The Community Church of Ludington where she served as Trustee of the church council, president of the Women's Society and a member of the Reading Circle. Mickey was a charter member of the Ludington Opti-Mrs. Club, a member of the Mason County Historical Society, a chairman of the Study Club, and a charter member and chair of the Friends of the Museum. She was a life member of the Women's Literary Club where she served as recording and corresponding secretary and held positions on various committees. Mickey enjoyed gardening and bridge. She will be greatly missed by her family, friends and the community. She is survived by a daughter, Carol Ashley of Ft. Meyers, Fla., and Charlevoix; a son, Wm. Michael (Nancy) Banninga of Hamlin Lake; and a son-in- law, Roy (Phyllis) Mastic. Mickey leaves eight grandchildren and numerous great and great-great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Barbara Mastic of Green Valley, Ariz., and a sister, Esther Helene, who died at age 7 during the influenza epidemic of World War I. Memorials may be given to the Community Church, Mason County Historical Society or the Sutter Living Center, 1001 Diana St., Ludington. A memorial service for the family will be held later this summer. The family has entrusted funeral arrangements to Oak Grove Funeral Home & Cremation Center in Ludington.
