Ionia Sentinel, 10 May 1878

Capt. Robt. S. Parks, one of the earliest settlers in the Grand River valley, 
died at Grand Rapids on the 8th inst. – He came to Ionia in 1834 or ’35, and was 
prominent in the steamboat navigation of the river.  The old “Nawbeck” and other 
boats encountered the perils of hidden snags and shoal waters as they wound their 
devious way in the all day trip from Grand Rapids to Lyons – the head of 
navigation – under his personal charge.
