Henry G. Parks, well-known in Ionia, died very suddenly at 2:10 o’clock Sunday afternoon. “Hanky,” as he was familiarly known, had recently been at Coldwater, and a week or two ago returned to Ionia, having since been suffering the consequences of a prolonged spree. Last Thursday he was taken to the Hotel Dexter where friends cared for him until Sunday, when Sheriff Moon and Deputy Smith prevailed upon him to go to the jail where he could be given good care until able to be about again. He objected, but finally started with them and walked and talked all right until they were on Main street. There his legs collapsed. After a rest he walked to the curb, and when about half way to the court house steps suddenly gave out again and the two officers had to carry him. They got as far as the jail steps, then his condition appeared so serious that Dr. Defendorf was telephoned for. Parks was taken into the jail office and before the doctor could do anything for him he was in a complete state of collapse, and died almost instantly. The deceased had no relatives in Michigan, but it is understood his wife, who is divorced from him, children and other relatives reside in Massachusetts. He was 48 years of age, and when sober and in his right mind was agreeable and jovial in his ways. He was owner of a fleet little horse “Hanky,” which made a fast record at all the county fairs in Western Michigan last fall.
