Ionia Daily Standard, 30 Mar 1883

Frank Patterson was killed on the farm of E. Dunham of Berlin on Saturday
afternoon.  They were engaged in cutting up a tree uprooted by the wind, the
butt of which was held suspended in the air by the root and branches.  The butt
was crooked and when cut loose flew around and striking Patterson in the breast
knocked him senseless and he died less than an hour afterwards.  The deceased
was 17 years old.  His father is dead and his mother living at present with Mr.
Dunham’s family.
