Patterson, the stone mason, was run over by a hand car, on the D.L.&N. track, about forty rods east of the Mill street crossing, shortly before 6 o’clock Tuesday eve., and died about two and a half hours later, at his home on Bayard street. The manner of the accident, as related by his son-in-law, is as follows: Patterson, John Eckman and a deaf-mute friend were returning from work to their homes. They were walking on the track, and had just stepped aside to permit the passing of a freight. They resumed their walk, and a very few minutes thereafter, observed a hand car coming at a rapid speed. Patterson and Eckman stepped aside, when Patterson observed his deaf friend walking rapidly ahead, evidently unconscious of the approaching car. Patterson ran to the friend and pushed him from the track, and in the effort, fell and was run over by the car. The car was derailed, and with the four workmen went down the embankment, but without further serious injury. Patterson was conveyed to his home and Dr. Beckwith was summoned. The injured man was found to be rapidly sinking; stimulants were administered, but without effect. He lay face down when run over, the car wheels passing over the small of the back. The injuries which caused death were entirely internal, but as death was to all indications very near, no extended examination was made of their extent.
