Born April 23, 1982 in Ionia, Mr. Payne was the son of Mr. and Mrs. William Payne, Sr. His father ran the Payne meat market in Ionia. Mr. Payne was a lifelong resident of Ionia and a veteran of World War 1. He served as a chief electrician in Tuckerton, New Jersey and met his wife, Kerry Gafkill, while stationed there. They were married April 28, 1917. A member of the Methodist Church of New Gretna, N.J., Mr. Payne was also a member of the Masonic Blue Lodge. He operated the Ionia Battery shop for many years. Surviving besides his wife are two sisters, Mrs. Fred Barnes and Mrs. Roy Hind, both of Ionia, and three nieces, Mrs. Jerry Carpenter of Lake Odessa, Mrs. A.M. Bittenbender of California and Mrs. Marvin Kuieck of Ionia. Funeral services will be held at Wood’s funeral home, Tuckerton, N.J., Sunday, September 28, at 2:30 p.m. Burial will be at New Gretna, New Jersey.
