Payne, 79, died at St. Lawrence hospital in Lansing Saturday at 5 a.m., three hours after admittance. She made her home at 702 West Willow, Lansing. Born February 18, 1879 in Kent county, she was the daughter of LeRoy and Isadore Belle Sayles. Mrs. Payne had lived in Lansing six years. She had been retired for nine years, after working at the University of Michigan 20 years from 1929 until her retirement. She resided in Ionia during her married life, except for one year in Fennville. Mrs. Payne was a member of the First Methodist church of Ionia. She was married to Joyce Payne in Ionia in 1901. He was a fireman on the train which went through a bridge in 1905. Mr. Payne was killed in the accident. Mrs. Payne was also preceded in death by a daughter, Mrs. Joyce Brigham, who died July 22, 1955. Surviving are two brothers, Guy Sayles of Ionia and Forrest Sayles of LaPorte, Ind.; one sister, Mrs. Maude Davis of Salem, Oregon, and several nieces and nephews. Funeral service will be held at Boynton’s funeral home Tuesday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Heath Goodwin officiating. Interment will be at Oak Hill cemetery.
