June 5, 2012 Vernice M. Payne, 80, of Lyons, passed away on May 30, 2012. Vernice was born on March 18, 1932 in Lansing the daughter of Wilson H. and Alice D. (Betz) Winnie. She married Richard Arlen Payne on March 24, 1950 and he preceded her death on Sept. 10, 2001 after 51 years of marriage. Vernice retired from the Ionia Manor after many hears of service. She had attended Pentecostal Churches throughout her life. In addition to her parents and husband, Vernice was preceded in death by a daughter, Sherry Maddox; brothers, Edwin "Eddie" Winnie, Wilson Winnie, Jr., Douglas Winnie, Robert Winnie, Kenneth "Kenny" Winnie; and sisters, Violet May Crandell and Winona Dryer. Vernice is survived by six children, Richard Payne of Greenville, Linda Witherell of Lowell, Timothy Payne of Portland, George Payne on Benzonie, Debbie (Scott) Warner of Stanton and Christine (David) Smith of Lyons; 28 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren; and sister, Bertha "Bert" Coats. The funeral Service will be held at 1 p.m., Friday, June 8, 2012 at the Lehman Funeral Home, 220 Rich St., Ionia. Interment will follow at Crystal Township Cemetery.
