Wave, Thurs. Aug. 13, 1953 LT. DOUGLAS PAYNE KILLED IN KOREA First Lieut. Douglas W. Payne, 27, only son of Mr. and Mrs. Wilber Payne of Hastings, was killed in action July 21, five days before the Korean truce was signed. As airborne infantry office, serving with the Republic of Korea troops as liaison officer, was killed during an attack by Communist forces, according to a letter received. A graduate of Hastings high school in 1943, he enlisted in the same year in the army and was placed on an inactive status for a year because of a spinal injury received while taking a special course at the University of Wisconsin. He returned to active duty a year later and served in Japan and the Philippines and when discharged from service took a pre law course at ROTC, at M.S.C. and had begun his law courses at University of Detroit when recalled to active duty in 1951. After special training he was sent to the Far East arriving in Korea in April 1953 and would have been released from active duty in January 1954. Besides the parents he is survived by one sister, Mrs. Hollie (Jean) McArthur of Lake Odessa, route 3.
