                William Payne, Sr., Retired Butcher, Dies Wednesday
William Payne, Sr. died Wednesday morning at 4 o'clock following several weeks of 
poor health which began with an illness early in the year and the last two weeks of

which had been critical.

Mr. Payne was born in Woodstock, Canada 71 years ago and was encouraged by a friend

to leave that country when a youth of 19 and cast his lot with the rising generation

in this country. The pal who induced Mr. Payne to come here returned to Canada but 
Mr. Payne never returned except for a brief visit. In Canada he learned to cut meat

and for years was employed by Scammeli and Rich in a building which stood on the 
ground no occupied by the Dodge garage. Later he established himself in the retail 
business and his last location was in the building where Lee Jones is located. Mr. 
Payne sold his business to Mr. Jones eight years ago and retired.

He was a member of the Methodist Episcopal church of Ionia.

Surviving him are his widow, with whom he celebrated his fortieth wedding 
anniversary April 4, two daughters, Mrs. Roy Hinds and Mrs. Fred Barnes and a son, 
William Payne Jr. the latter a resident of Muir. He also leaves three grandchildren

and one brother, Thomas of Ottawa, Canada.

The funeral services will be held Saturday afternoon at 2:30 from the residence, 507

State street. The interment will be made in the mausoleum in Highland Park cemetery.

Rev. W. F. Kendrick will be in charge.
