Peabody, 92, of Ionia, passed away Thursday, March 8, 2001 at Heartland Health Care Center in Ionia. Vern was born May 3, 1908, in Orleans, the son of Ernest and Maggie (Jamison) Peabody. He served his country in the U.S. Army during WWII, fighting in the Battle of the Bulge on Omaha Beach with General George Patten. Vern was married Aug. 10, 1940, in Ionia, to Mary Fox and she preceded him in death. Mr. Peabody was an avid reader and was proud and honored to be Grand Marshall of the Ionia 2000 Memorial Day Parade. He was a past member of the Ionia Moose and Elks and a lifetime member of the Sheridan V.F.W. Post #5065. Mr. Peabody is survived by his nieces and nephews, Pat and John Stowell of Ionia, Joe (Sue) Peabody of Tampa, FL, and Mary Anne (David) Alexy of Shelby Twp.; great nieces and nephews, Dennis Cronk of East Lansing, Dawn (Darrell) Reynolds of Ionia, Kim (Mike) Danielski of Kentwood, Deanna Parker of Ionia, Brian (Brenda) Cronk of Ionia, Lori (Wayne) Chrstiansen of Grand Ledge, John Jr. (Lori) Stowell of Ionia, Teresa (Bruce) Helmes of Ionia, Steve Alexy of Utica, Ken Alexy of Shelby Twp.; 23 great-great-nieces and nephew; 2 great- great-great-nieces; special cousins, Violet Parks of Flint and Jerry (Linda) Parks of Houghton Lake. He was preceded in death, in addition to his parents and wife, Mary, by 2 brothers, Kenneth and Elton Peabody. Visitation for Vern J. Peabody will be Wednesday, March 14, 2001, from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. at St. Johns Episcopal Church, Ionia. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. at the church with Fr. Scott Anderson officiating. Interment will be in Clear Lake Cemetery at a later date. The family requests in lieu of flowers, contributions be made to a charity of the donor’s choice. Envelopes are available at St. Johns Episcopal Church and Myers Memorial Chapel, Ionia, who is in charge of arrangements.
