February 4, 1916 AGED RESIDENT PASSES AWAY MRS. CAROLINE PEACOCK HAD BEEN RESIDENT OF ODESSA TOWNSHIP SINCE 1865, WAS 81 YEARS OLD. Mrs. Caroline Peacock, one of the oldest settlers in this part of Ionia county, died Monday morning of old age, being 81 years old last December. The funeral was held at the house Thursday morning at 10:30 o'clock a.m., Rev. Fay Wind of Wayland preaching the sermon. The music was furnished by Russell Goodemoot. Burial was made in Lakeside cemetery. The deceased had been in comparatively good health until about six weeks ago, when she began to loose strength and continued to decline until her death. Like a well filled and ripened shock of corn, her days here on earth have ended. With the fullness and richness of a Christian character, the memory of which is a comfort to her family and a consolation to her friends and neighbors. Margaret Caroline Downing, daughter of Samuel and Elizabeth Downing, was born in Darke county, Ohio, Dec. 9, 1834, and died at her home in Odessa Jan. 31, 1916, aged 81 years, one month and 22 days. She was one of a family of nine children, of whom four are living, as follows; James L and Jason J. of Union City, Ind., and Walker Downing and Mrs. Catherine Peacock of Sebewa. She removed with her parents to Randolph county, Ind., in 1837, where she was married to John J. Peacock, Nov. 29, 1856. In the fall of 1865 they came to Michigan, settling in Sebewa township. In the spring of 1869 they removed to section 1, Odessa In 1873 they returned to Indiana, living there about two and one-half years, when they returned to the home in Odessa, where the remaining years of Mrs.Peacock's life were spent. The deceased was the mother of nine children, two of whom died in infancy. The surviving children are Arthur S. of Wakeney, Kas.; Samuel L. of Sebewa; John J. at home; Mrs. Thursa A. Goodemoot of Sebewa; Jason E. of Lake Odessa; Thomas H. of Lennep, Mont and Mrs. Anna C. Steiner of Virginia City, Mont. Besides the relatives mentioned above, there remain to mourn her loss the aged husband, now in feeble health; 20 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and a large number of other relatives and friends. Mrs. Peacock lived a consistent Christian life, being a member of the Disciple church of Sebewa. Her faith in Christ was evidenced by acts ad deeds rather than words, and her kindly offices will not soon be forgotten.
