C. PEACOCK DIES TUESDAY EVENING AS RESULT ----------- EARLY WEST SEBEWA SETTLER, ONCE POST MASTER THERE, LEAVES WIFE AND SEVEN CHILDREN, OBITUARY Benjamin C. Peacock of West Sebewa started out Saturday morning with a colt for a drive, his 13 year old daughter Ella accompanying him. When near the home of his son-in-law Russel Waring, they met two loads of household furniture. The colt became frightened at the first load and Ella got out of the buggy, and one of the men in charge of the goods led the horse past, but when the horse saw the second load he became uncontrollable and Mr. Peacock attempted to get out of the buggy; upon reaching for the step the horse made a plunge and threw Mr. Peacock forward his foot catching in the spokes of the wheel while the body was thrown under the buggy, the legs passing over the axle. In this condition he was dragged about one hundred rods, receiving besides a badly torn and twisted leg a cut on the head. He was taken to his daughter's near by and his son Dr. Thos. L. of Sunfield and Dr Alton of Portland sent for. These two doctors soon arrived and dressed the wounds and although suffering greatly he was thought to be in a fair way to recovery, which hopes were entertained until Tuesday morning when it was notice he was rapidly failing. Gangreen set in and he died Tuesday evening at 5 o'clock. Mr. Peacock was born Aug. 21, 1846 in Howard Co., Indiana, he came to Michigan in 1867 in company with others who settled in Sebewa. He began working for Mr. Downing and Jan. 4, 1868 married a daughter of his employer, Miss Catherine. To this union were born nine children, seven living and two dying in infancy. Mr. Peacock ran a store at West Sebewa for some time then moved a half mile west and ran a store and kept the post office until the rural delivery did away with many of the smaller offices. He then moved on his farm where he has since lived. At the age of twenty two he joined the Christian of Disciple church and remained a firm believer in the faith of his choice and a consistent christian until death. He realized that death was near and said that he was ready to go. Such is the death of the Christian. The funeral was held at the Baptist church in Sebewa Thursday at 10 o'clock Elder Sias of Wayland officiating, and attended by a very large concourse of relatives and friends. The remains were laid to rest in Lakeside cemetery. The deceased is survived by his wife and the children as follows; Cora now Mrs. Russel Waring; Dora now Mrs. Edd Johnson; Della and Ella,, who are both at home; the sons are Dr. Thos. I, of Sunfield, H. J. and J. W. both of Sherman City. The many friends of the deceased including the WAVE unite in extending sincere sympathy.
