Peake, 73, died Saturday morning at St. Lawrence hospital, where he had been a patient since Tuesday evening. Mention of his illness was made in last week’s issue. He was taken suddenly ill in his law office above the Review & Observer plant, and was removed to Hotel Divine. That evening he was taken to the hospital. Mr. Peake was born in Danby, the son of J. Warren Peake. When a boy the family moved to Ionia, the father having been elected to a county office. Russell graduated from Ionia High school and immediately began the study of law in the office of an Ionia attorney. He studied there several years, and was admitted to the bar in 1892. Mr. Peake married Miss Alice Carey, whose father at one time operated a jewelry store here. The couple located in Chicago, where Mr. Peake spent many years as a corporation attorney, representing several well known Chicago and mid-western firms. Later he went to Detroit, and in that city his wife’s death occurred. He returned to Portland in 1936 and opened a general law practice. At time of his death he was one of the justices of the peace of the township, and a member of the township board. Thirteen nephews and nieces survive, and there are two first cousins, Frank E. Doremus, now of Fowlerville, and his sister, Mrs. Addie Doremus Reeder, of Florida. Funeral services were held at Bandfield Funeral chapel on Monday afternoon, Rev. William Gray, of Portland Congregational church, officiating, and burial was on the Peake family lot in Danby cemetery. Bearers were all nephews, and were Guy Peake, Ben Sykes, Luther Lindsley, Ray Pryer and Clarence and Elmer Martin.
