Ionia Sentinel - Thursday, Dec. 6, 1900

J. Warren Peake.
The funeral services for J. Warren Peake were attended by a large number of 
friends and the Oddfellows, from the residence at 9 o'clock yesterday morning. 
Rev. D.A. Jewell officiated and the pallbearers were Messrs. C.C. Cook, R.D. 
Kemp, C.J. Oliver, W.W. Inman, W.B. VanVliet and J.L. Sweeney. There was a 
profusion of flowers. The remains were taken to Portland at 12:20 for interment 
in Danby cemetery, being accompanied by the bearers and a delegation from the 
Oddfellows.

Mr. Peake was born in New York state Dec. 3, 1834. At an early age he went with 
his parents to Seneca county, Ohio, and in 1956 was married there to Ann E. 
Lyon, who died Sept. 14, 1900. In 1858 the settled in Danby township, this 
county.

Mr. Peake taught school in both Michigan and Ohio. He was educated in 
Heidelberg college, at Tiffin, Ohio. While he was a farmer in Danby he always 
took an active part in politics and held nearly every township office, 
including justice of the peace, clerk, treasurer, and supervisor. In 1884 he 
was elected county treasurer on the democratic ticket and held the office four 
years being reelected in 1886. In the fall of 1886 he moved with is family to 
Ionia and had since lived here during which time he was secretary of the Ionia, 
Eaton & Barry company, of which he was receiver up to the time of his first 
illness, February 1899.

As a member of the city council Mr. Peake was an alderman of considerable 
activity. He was always ready to fearlessly offer his views on any schemes or 
business that came up, at times. possibly to the dissatisfaction of his party 
constituents on the board, if they could not agree. He belonged to both the 
I.O.O.F. lodge and encampment, and was a member of Portland lodge, No. 60, 
A.O.U.W.

As above stated Mrs. Peake died a few weeks ago. He is survived by three sons, 
Clarence W. Peake, of Danby, Lynne L. Peake, of Grand Rapids and Russell A. 
Peake at present of this city. One daughter died in 1891.

George Peake of Danby, Royal A., of Portland, Jeanette Rozell of Cherrydale, 
Kansas, Sarah Doremus of Lake City, Mich., Adeline VanSickle and Jane McCrum of 
Eagle, are brothers and sisters.
